A hand-me-down phone still has you all over it: your photos, your saved passwords, your logged-in apps. A child's first phone should start clean.
Do it
- Save anything you want to keep. Photos to iCloud, Google Photos or a computer. Check your messages and notes too.
- Sign out of your accounts first. On iPhone, Settings → [your name] → Sign Out, which turns off Find My and Activation Lock. On Android, remove your Google account under Settings → Accounts. Skip this and the phone can ask for your password again after the reset.
- Factory reset. iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Android: usually Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (the wording varies by make).
Most of the 20 minutes is the phone doing the work while you put the kettle on.
Android and planning on Device Owner mode (Step 11)? Its setup erases the phone again, so read Step 11 before you set anything else up.
