A first phone doesn't need a big data plan. It needs to make calls, send texts, and not run up a bill.

Do it

  1. Choose pay-as-you-go or a small SIM-only plan. Pay-as-you-go can't overspend. A monthly plan is simpler to keep topped up. Either way, ask about a spend cap.
  2. Check the phone isn't locked to a network. Older phones sometimes are. Your old network can unlock it.
  3. eSIM? Activate it now, not on the 24th. Activation can need a QR code, an app, or a wait. Physical SIM? Pop it in, top it up, and check it gets signal.
  4. Save the new number in your own phone today.

The networks are busy on Christmas Day, and so are you. Do it before the 24th.
