Brickify
That old phone in the kitchen drawer might be your child's first phone. Before you plan anything around it, check it can run what it needs to.
Do it
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → Software Version. You need iOS 16 or later, which means iPhone 8 / iPhone X or newer.
- Android: Settings → About phone → Android version. You need Android 8.0 or later, which is almost anything from about 2018 onwards.
- Showing an older number? Look in Settings → General → Software Update (iPhone) or Settings → System update (Android). Many phones can update further than the version they're on.
While you're holding it
Look at the battery and the screen. On an iPhone, Settings → Battery → Battery Health tells you how tired the battery is. A cracked screen or a battery that dies by lunchtime is worth sorting now, not on Christmas morning.
