Brickify vs Smartphone Free Childhood

It isn't really a versus. I built a phone app, and I'm totally for the smartphone-free childhood.

I'm an engineer and I'm tech savvy, so when the Smartphone Free Childhood movement first started, I'll be honest: I didn't want my kids to fall behind by not having a smartphone.

From pro-tech to pro-waiting

So I thought of an in-between. My first app, Big Sister, automatically detected dangers online. But building it meant learning about all the dangers, and there were just too many. That's when I realised the smartphone-free childhood is actually the way forward.

When you've come from a point of being totally pro-tech, that means more. I've been through the journey of learning what's out there, I caught the dangers with AI and there were just SO MANY! So I thought: not for my kids.

So I built Brickify instead

Instead of a permissive app for parents, I built a blocking one. Brickify blocks the apps you think need to be blocked, on your own schedule. If they need maps or the phone on the way to school, they can have that, and then it locks down at school.

It helps me with my own tech detox too.

If you can wait, wait

I can't be there propping up other people and letting their kids out onto the internet without any safety barriers. So that's my stance on Smartphone Free Childhood: if you can wait, wait. If you can't, at least make sure the phone is controlled, and Brickify is a good option for that.

More on this: smartphone-free until 14, but still reachable, and brick phone or Brickify?
