The phone ladder, close up

Every child climbs the phone ladder at their own pace. Brickify is the middle rung, but it isn't one step. It's a set of small ones you build yourself, so your child can go from "calls and texts" to "nearly a smartphone" without a new phone at every stage.

Inside the Brickify rung

These are examples, not fixed levels. You create your own profiles and choose exactly which apps each one allows. Most families start near the bottom and move up one app at a time.

  1. 3.1

    Brick

What's on: calls and texts. That's it.

Suits: a first phone, the walk to school, phone-free school days, bedtime.

Pair it with: location sharing, if you want it
  2. 3.2

    Brick plus

What's on: the useful bits. Maps, camera, music, bus or train times.

Suits: a child who's starting to get about on their own.

Pair it with: nothing extra. These apps don't connect them to strangers
  3. 3.3

    Friends, at set times

What's on: everything in Brick plus, and one messaging app, open after school and off again at bedtime.

Suits: the moment plans start happening in a group chat. (WhatsApp's minimum age in the UK is 13.)

Pair it with: image safety settings and a "show me" agreement
  4. 3.4

    Open after homework

What's on: most of the apps you've agreed, in the evening. School hours and bedtime stay Brick.

Suits: a child who's handled the earlier steps well.

Pair it with: your phone's own app-limit settings
  5. 3.5

    Nearly there

What's on: almost everything, with Brick only at night.

Suits: getting ready to step off the ladder.

Pair it with: a conversation about what changes when Brickify comes off

How families actually use it

The ladder isn't a straight line through the day. Most families run two or three profiles every day, and Brickify switches between them on a schedule, so nobody has to remember.

An example day: Brick from 07:00 to 16:00 for school, Friends at set times from 16:00 to 20:00, then Brick from 20:00 to 07:00 for bedtime.

Any time nothing is scheduled: your chosen default profile.

Climbing the ladder means changing the schedule or adding one app to a profile, not handing over a new phone. Moving to a more open profile early needs your PIN and, if you've set one up, a second factor.

Stepping off

At the top, your child moves to an ordinary smartphone with your phone's own Screen Time or Family Link settings, or none at all. Because they've opened one app at a time, there's no "nothing to everything" overnight.
